Overview: The Adventure Inc. team searches for The Icon of St. Nicholas, an ancient religious artifact that is rumored to be hidden in a remote Russian village.
Synopsis by Tribune 2003
Sailing on the sun drenched shores of the Black Sea, aboard the Vast Explorer, Judson Cross presents Gabriel Patterson and Mackenzie Previn with photographs of The Icon of St. Nicholas, an exquisite, jewel encrusted religious painting that belonged to the Romanovs and became lost during the Russian Revolution. Little do they know, they are being watched by Russian Mafia member Sonya Goran (Jayne Heitmeyer) as she spies on the trio through a pair of binoculars.
After receiving permission from Sergei Borodin (Carlo Rota), the Regional Director of the International Black Sea Tourism Office, Judson and Gabriel set off in a small Cessna to find the lost village of Zabwila, while Mackenzie stays back on the ship. While the two men search the forest below, Sonya launches a grenade and the plane crashes into the forest. Judson opens his eyes and sees a village through the shimmering mist. A Russian Orthodox priest named Father Filip (Andrew Gillies) and his 16 year-old niece, Natalia (Ksenia Solo), come rushing toward the wreck and bring Judson and Gabe into the village. Inside his home, Father Filip places a hand on Judson and Gabe and the two are miraculously healed.
Sonya finds the plane wreckage as well the photos of the Icon of St. Nicholas. She knows there is a village near the crash site, however, she cannot find it through the dense fog. Sonya is certain the priceless Icon is hidden in the small town and resorts to yelling threats through a bullhorn, instructing the villagers to relinquish the relic. Hearing no response, she orders her henchman to fire into the fog, nearly hitting Judson and one of the villagers. The villagers in turn retaliate with their own weapons, a small battle ensues and Sonia's henchman is wounded.
Borodin later learns of the shootout in the forest. Sonya admits to him she wants to sell the Icon to an art dealer in Moscow. While Sonya is interested in the money, Borodin seems more interested in the actual village. He tells Sonya that the only reason he let her go after Judson is because he thought maybe he could lead her to the village.
Father Filip shows Judson a small circuit behind his ear growing into his skin. He explains that before the Russian Revolution, the Soviets tried to perfect the Neurological Enhancement Transmitter (N.E.T.), which uses their reactions to activate the implants. Natalia was the last to receive the implant and the one who possesses the strongest E.S.P. powers. In essence, she is the little 'miracle worker' of the village. The technology, however, was flawed and killed Natalia's parents. To protect themselves, the villagers hid in the fog, which is actually a telepathic illusion.
Back on the Vast Explorer, Mackenzie worries about Gabe and Judson and conducts research on the lost village. She taps into secret Russian documents on the computer and finds out about N.E.T. and how it gave special E.S.P. abilities to the villagers. She is surprised by Sonya and a fight between the two ensues. Mackenzie is eventually taken prisoner by one of Sonya's henchmen.
Father Filip shows Judson and Gabe the St. Nicholas Icon inside the church. However, they are taken by surprise by Borodin, who follows them into the church and instructs his gunmen to surround them. Borodin admits to everyone that he is not interested in the Icon but in the village and it's inhabitants. He further reveals the he is behind the N.E.T. chip experiments, which were conducted on the villagers. Suddenly, Sonya walks in with Mackenzie and Judson tries to break loose from the guards. Borodin fires at Judson causing Natalia to jump up and shout 'Stop!' The bullet stops in mid-air and falls to the ground. Borodin grabs Natalia and asks her where the N.E.T chip is hidden. She begins to shout at him and at the same time, the Icon begins to flicker. Everyone realizes the N.E.T. chip is hidden in the relic. Before Borodin can grab it, the villagers barge into the church and restrain Borodin and his crew.
After handcuffing Borodin and Sonya, Judson removes the N.E.T. chip and returns the icon to Father Filip.
