Synopsis by Tribune 2003
When Mackenzie returns from a dive, she is approached by Jay Canfield (Todd Boyce), who claims to know her. Another man watches the two, un-noticed, with a half of a heart tattooed on his hand. She doesn't remember who Canfield is, but she gets a brief flashback of him firing a gun at her. Sensing danger, she begins to defend herself when he tries to force her to go with him. Two agents step in to try and contain her, but she escapes and ducks into a nearby houseboat.
Meanwhile, Judson and Gabriel make their way down to meet Mackenzie, but when they arrive, she is nowhere to be found. At the houseboat, while changing into borrowed clothes, it is revealed that Mackenzie has a half of a heart tattooed on her hip. Mackenzie makes her way into town, just missing Gabriel and Judson, who are concerned for her safety after finding her dive gear and some blood at the water's edge.
Mackenzie finds a phone and calls Judson. When she notices she is being followed, she hangs up before she has a chance to explain what happened. As she is walking away, Gavin Merrill (Henry Ian Cusick), who is the man with the heart tattoo, approaches her and tells her, "It's been a long time". Mackenzie doesn't know who Merrill is either. While flashbacks are inundating Mackenzie, including one where she and Merrill kiss, Canfield suddenly approaches with his agents, weapons drawn. Merrill pulls her away and they escape. Confused and a little scared, Mackenzie is not sure whom to trust: Canfield or Merrill.
As Judson and Gabriel track Mackenzie's whereabouts, Canfield's agents approach them. Canfield introduces himself. He is from the U.S. government. He tells Judson that he needs his help to keep Mackenzie alive because people are trying to kill her due to her past exploits as an 'independent contractor'.
After a memory spark, Mackenzie goes to meet Judson and Gabriel at a cafe, only to find Merrill there. Suddenly, Judson, Gabriel and Canfield appear and a shootout begins. Mackenzie ducks for cover and escapes with Merrill.
Frustrated and confused, Judson, Gabriel and Canfield return to Canfield's office where he tells them the real truth: Mackenzie was involved in an arms smuggling ring, trading diamonds for weapons. On one mission, things went wrong and three agents died and six million dollars worth of diamonds disappeared. Canfield knows that Merrill, who used to be Mackenzie's partner, was behind it all and now he's trying to use her to find the diamonds.
After spending the night at a hotel together, Merrill questions Mackenzie about the missing diamonds. He doesn't believe her when she says she doesn't remember and his evil side begins to surface. A vivid flashback strikes her. She remembers that Merrill had drugged her with a truth serum to get her to tell him where the diamonds were, but it backfired and erased her memory. Realizing that Canfield, not Merrill, is the one she should trust, she escapes and heads to Canfield's office. Storming in, she finds Judson there. As she and Judson go to leave, Merrill arrives with a gun trained on Gabriel.
Merrill forces the trio to take him to the diamonds. As they get closer Mackenzie remembers where the diamonds are. She goes to an old capstan at a shipping yard and just as Merrill thinks she's giving him the diamonds, she grabs a gun that was stashed with the diamonds. Merrill grabs the diamonds and releases Gabriel. Canfield arrives and just as Merrill is about to shoot him, Mackenzie hits him with two bullets in the chest and the diamonds fall into the water. Mackenzie's past is recovered, but the diamonds are never found.
