Adventure Inc - Episode 17 - Spirit of the Mask

Overview: An ancient mask stirs up evil in a small West African village.

Synopsis by Tribune 2003

The Adventure Inc. crew find an ancient mask known as the sacred mask of Oya, and return it to Pere Martin (Thierry Ashanti), the priest of the Yeveh village. Pere explains that the mask contains the power of hundreds of years of fear, pain and hate from when the Yeveh were taken from their homes by slave traders. The mask has been buried every since and the hatred inside it fermented in the ground for centuries.

Just when Judson, Gabriel and Mackenzie believe that their mission is complete, a man attacks Pere and steals the mask. Feeling it is their duty to retrieve it, the Adventure Inc. crew sets off to find the mask.

Claude (Benjamin Ling), a villager helping to find the mask, is suddenly shot and killed by the man who stole the mask. As Claude dies, he says that the thief's name is Louis (Jeremie Covillault) and that he is his brother. He also says that the mask made Louis kill him and that now Mackenzie has the mask. Puzzled by this comment, Judson and Gabriel confront her. Mackenzie, who had been acting strange after she had held the mask, becomes uncharacteristically angry and storms off with her luggage.

While Mackenzie is asleep in her hotel room, she has a vivid dream that she puts on the mask and almost kills Judson. She wakes up abruptly and shaken, she splashes her face with water to gather her bearings.

Meanwhile, Charlotte (Jules Leyser), who desires to use the mask to become a goddess, and her accomplice Drake (Richard Dillane) break into her hotel room and steal the mask. The two then go to Pere's office and steal the box that holds the mask as well as the ritual moon dagger. They hold a gun to Pere's head and take him to the sacrificial chamber.

After she realizes the mask is stolen, Mackenzie finds Judson and Gabriel and explains that she felt as if something came over her and that she had to protect the mask from everyone. She claims that the mask brought out the evil that was already deep inside of her. Although Judson tries to reassure her, Mackenzie cannot shake her uneasy feeling.

Judson, Mackenzie, and Gabriel set off to find the mask and they find the sacrifice chamber just in time to save Pere from being stabbed by Charlotte. Charlotte runs out of the chamber still wearing the mask and as Mackenzie grabs her, the mask flies off her face and into the water far below. Without the mask, Charlotte loses her strength to fight back and she sags to the ground.

At the end, Pere and the Adventure Inc. crew agree that the villagers are better off with the mask lost in the ocean.
